Rest in Peace, Stan Lee. All he really did, along with Jack Kirby and Steve Ditko, was create our modern mythology. The heroes Lee created along with Kirby and Ditko were not the flawless demigods of DC Comics. Lee’s heroes had real-world problems; they had family issues, they fought amongst themselves, they were alcoholics, they were bullied, they were broke. And his villains were just as complex. Stan Lee’s bad guys didn’t know they were the bad guy. It is impossible to overstate the impact Stanley Lieber had on modern popular culture. To say he will be missed is as much an understatement as saying he wrote comic books for a living. Stan, you truly were The Man. Tell Jack and Steve hello for all of us. Excelsior.
