My Aquaman Review. The best DC Film yet. It ties with Wonder Woman for best overall DC Film. Great story from beginning to end, amazing cast, underwater scenes were an amazing and great director. Go see it when releases this Friday. Aquaman Jason Momoa signature, Since everyone knows I’m a DC fan I was going to hype this up regardless if it was bad or not. Where’s the sarcasm font. But this film already had a few strikes working against it. 1) It has a hero that’s been the butt of superhero jokes for at least 60 years. He talks to fish and rides on dolphins, how super. It’s existing in a dysfunctional comic book film universe that has split fans and critics since their first entry. So this film had a lot against it before it was even released.

Even with a totally cheesy hero and with a million things that could go wrong the film largely works. What does work well is how do you take a hero who’s a joke and give him respect? You cast a physical intimidating specimen like Jason Mamoa for starters. Mamoa works really well as Aquaman he does great with the action and did well with the humor of the film. The film rests squarely on his shoulders and it would fail if he didn’t give a good performance. The costume and creature design were amazing. If you can make the OG Aquaman suit look good, you deserve an Oscar. The suit looked spectacular in live action. The same with Ocean Master and Black Manta their looks were ripped straight from the comics. Also, Aquaman is probably the most beautiful film visually all year.

For those who thought DC movies were dark and drab will love the bright luminescence colors in this film. Going to Atlantis the first time reminded me a lot of seeing Pandora the first time. DC has a way of building worlds. First Krypton, then Themiscirya and now Atlantis. Beautifully realized world. Seeing Black Manta in live action was great. The suit and the action set piece involving him was great. The cinematography was amazing. There were some shots that I really wanted to applaud in the theater. Just some gorgeous shots. Now some negatives because it’s not a perfect movie. The first thing that bugged me was the overuse of slow-mo. James Wan went to the school of Snyder there. Also, the dialogue was clunky at times and cheesy. The pacing could have been better. Because it’s a loose adaptation of a massive storyline, the film moves at a clip pace and doesn’t slow down to really explain anything. Overall, it was a fun ride. There were some goofy things about the movie but they went for it and embraced it with gusto.
